The Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET, President Aree Moon), whose president serves as a member of the United Nations 10-Member Group on Science, Technology and Innovation (2024–2025), participated in the 11th STI Forum for Sustainable Development Goals (UN STI Forum), held at UN Headquarters in New York in May, presenting a global science and technology agenda for sustainable development.
Hosted by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the forum welcomed more than 500 participants including science and technology policy experts from around the world, with discussions held under the theme "Transformative, equitable and coordinated science, technology and innovation for the 2030 Agenda and a sustainable future for all.“
At Session 1 of the forum, "Transforming Water Systems with Science, Technology and Innovation," President Moon proposed three strategic approaches to achieving equitable access to water. These included strengthening data-driven policy decision-making through disaggregated data by gender, age, income, and region; advancing community-centered digital innovation to address rising water consumption resulting from the expansion of AI infrastructure; and ensuring the meaningful participation of women and marginalized groups in water infrastructure planning and leadership processes.
President Moon was also invited as a panelist at the side event "From Digital Inclusion to Innovation: Advancing Science, Technology and Youth Entrepreneurship for Development," where she introduced Korea's science and technology policy model to the international community. Her presentation covered the transformation of universities into innovation hubs — as demonstrated by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) — and WISET's mid-to-long-term policy roadmap for supporting women in science and engineering.
"This forum was a meaningful opportunity to share Korea's experience in science and technology — and WISET's policy expertise — as part of the global effort to address the defining sustainability challenges of our time," said President Aree Moon.
